New and Expecting Parents

Congratulations on your pregnancy or new baby!

The Down Syndrome Association of Hamilton supports families who are expecting, or have had a baby with Down syndrome. We also provide resources to health care providers, caregivers and other professionals.

What to Expect:

Often pregnant mothers will undergo screening which may indicate a ‘risk’ or certainty for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome. Patients may then be referred to a Prenatal Diagnosis Clinic.  There are three types of Down syndrome (T21, Mosiac and Translocation). The most common is Trisomy 21 (T21). Genetic testing is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of Down Syndrome.

Babies with Down syndrome benefit significantly from early intervention strategies like feeding support, physio and speech and language therapy. Babies with Down syndrome may experience medical issues covered in the resources below. It is common for babies to have feeding issues due to low muscle tone. Heart issues are common. Most of the health conditions seen in babies are manageable and/or resolve over time.

Life expectancy has dramatically increased in the last 40 years. This is largely due to shifting attitudes and expectations. Today with increased inclusion, early intervention therapies, access to resources and education, children with Down syndrome lead lives similar to ‘typical’ children.

We are here to meet and support new and expectant parents. Contact us for a phone or in person appointment.
